About Gen1Recomp

What is Gen1Recomp?

Gen1Recomp is a hand-written Lua/LÖVE2D recreation that imports game data from a compatible user-supplied Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver or Crystal ROM. It is not a conventional Game Boy emulator and does not include a ROM. Read how Gen1Recomp works.

What does Gen1Recomp++ mean?

Gen1Recomp++ is the expanded Gen1Recomp project. It adds Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal plus the developing Gen 2 systems to the existing Red, Blue and Yellow foundation. It uses the same repository, downloads and Lua/LÖVE2D engine. The ++ marks the wider scope; it does not mean C++.

Is Gen1Recomp official Pokemon software?

No. It is an unofficial fan project, and this is an independent information website.

ROMs and Supported Games

Which games are accepted?

Gen1Recomp accepts the canonical US versions of Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal. Red, Blue and Yellow are the established Gen 1 games; Gold, Silver and Crystal remain Gen 2 Phase 1. See Supported Games.

Are Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal complete?

No. All three games can be imported and selected in the launcher, and the v0.2 releases include extensive Gen 2 fixes, but the project still describes the Gen 2 engine as under construction. Crystal is specifically labelled Beta.

Which Pokemon Crystal revisions are supported?

The canonical US Crystal 1.0 and 1.1 ROMs are accepted. Other regions, revisions and modified files are not confirmed.

Are ROM hacks supported?

Arbitrary ROM-hack support remains unconfirmed. A modified ROM can fail the importer's file verification.

Does this website provide ROMs?

No. It does not host ROMs, link to unauthorized ROM downloads or provide generated game-data caches.

Online Play and Saves

What does the Online tab support?

The launcher can host or join battles, show live matches to spectators, run tournaments and trade Pokemon between save files. Rooms specify the game, Gen1Recomp version and rules they use. Custom-cart rooms require the same sealed cart on both sides.

Is the Online tab the same as the Link menu?

No. Online is the newer launcher service. The in-game Link menu remains the peer-to-peer local-network option.

Can I launch a game or custom cart directly on Android or iOS?

Yes. Version 0.2.41 added the gen1recomp++://launch URL scheme for game, custom-cart, save-slot, launcher, sync and update choices. iPhone and iPad users can also create a Home Screen entry from an imported cartridge or custom-cart action. Invalid game or cart values fall back to the launcher.

Can Gen1Recomp import and export Gold, Silver or Crystal cartridge saves?

General Gen 2 cartridge-save import and export was added in v0.2.32. Platform-specific limits still apply: the current v0.2.60 Switch transfer document continues to mark Gen 2 raw .sav transfer unsupported on Switch.

DramaticShapeVoxelMod

Is VoxelMod required?

No. VoxelMod is an optional, separate graphics mod for the Red, Blue and Yellow 3D presentation documented on this website.

Does archived VoxelMod v1.8.2 support Pokemon Gold, Silver or Crystal?

Gen 2 compatibility is not confirmed. Use the archived VoxelMod only for the Red, Blue and Yellow setup documented on this website unless a maintained project specifically states that it supports a Gen 2 game.

Is DramaticShapeVoxelMod still maintained?

No. The creator removed the original repository and stepped back. Version 1.8.2 is the last known original release; preserved links and maintained alternatives are on the VoxelMod Download page.

Platforms, Status and Safety

Where can I download Gen1Recomp 0.2.60?

Use the Gen1Recomp Download page to choose the official GitHub asset for your device.

Does it work on every device?

No universal compatibility is guaranteed. Package availability does not prove support for every operating-system version, GPU, controller, firmware or optional mod.

Which Linux file should I download?

Use the x86_64 AppImage on a conventional 64-bit Intel/AMD Linux system, the Flatpak bundle for a local x86_64 Flatpak installation, or the ARM64 AppImage on a compatible 64-bit ARM Linux system. The release no longer provides the older Linux ZIP.

Where can I check current bugs?

Use Known Issues for context and the official Gen1Recomp issue tracker for current reports.

How can I report an error on this website?

Use the contact address on the About page. Do not send ROMs, credentials or private device information.
